This elegantly made Small Bronze Medicine Buddha Statue depicts the Healing Buddha (Sanskrit: Bhaisajyaguru) in seated meditation. He is sometimes confused with Shakyamuni Buddha, the 5th century monk credited as the founder of modern Buddhism.
In his extended right hand, the Buddha of Healing presents a branch from the myrobalan plant, while the other cradles a medicinal herb jar. In Tibetan medicine and Ayurveda, this fruit-bearing plant is considered to be one of the strongest medicinal plants. He is seated atop a lotus throne, a symbol of his pure and enlightened state, while dressed in simplistic robes.
In most Buddhist art, the Medicine Buddha is depicted with having solid blue skin. This is a reference to lapis lazuli, a gemstone that is sacred in Buddhism for its associations with healing. Because of this, Medicine Buddha is sometimes referred to as the Blue Buddha.
