Painted Earth Touching Buddha Statue

This beautifully painted Buddha statue shows the Buddha in the Bhumisparsha mudra: the earth touching gesture. This mudra represents the moment the Buddha reached enlightenment.

It represents the defeat of the demon king Mara but also the unwavering or firmness shown by the Buddha while he was in pursuit of enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree. It is thought that this mudra helps to transform negative energies such as rage and anger into true wisdom.
